what proof is there of a hole in the ozone layer?
it seems the idea of the ozone layer scare has ceased, what was or is the evidence for this falsehood??

Funny story, I was hanging out with some friends who were talking about this. We finished talking and I stepped outside I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say that this cab was rare but I thought 'Nah forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'. I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'. I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air.

Not a falsehood. When the world replaced propellants in spray cans, and stopped the production of R12 and R22 which were the refrigerants that were depleting the ozone layer the damage began to very slowly repair it's self. But it will take some time.

I am an old man and I remember the "hole" in the ozone scare. The eco freaks were jumping up and down screaming that the hole in the ozone layer was gonna destroy the earth and kill us all. It was such a good story the liberal media picked it up and started warning us about the danger and promising us death and destruction if we didn't act immediately. Then the gubment got involved and had Senate committees investigate the problem and how they could solve it and save the world if only they could raise taxes, pass more regulations and restrictions on private business and get more control of our lives.
Somehow, during all this jumping, running and screaming about the impending destruction to the planet they never quite got around to explaining the "holes" were naturally occurring thin spots of ozone in the atmosphere over the poles that had been around for millions of years without killing anybody. I guess they were so busy telling everyone how these holes caused cancer they just never found the time.
I remember worrying about Santa Claus dying of cancer. He is the only person I know who lives at one of the poles. I had some vague thoughts about penguins getting cancer, but then I realized I didn't know any penguins so I decided not to worry about it.
Anyway, this ranting and fear mongering went on for a couple of years. Every week on the TV news they reminded us about the danger. The environmental groups raised a lot of money and a lot of lawyers got rich suing people over the ozone layer. Newspapers had huge front page articles about the dangers and how to protect yourself from cancer, low sperm count and birth defects. The sold a lot of papers and made a lot of money.
Then one fine sunny summer day the gubment announced they had passed new taxes, a whole bunch of new regulations and restrictions, and had grabbed more power for themselves so the ozone layer problem was solved. I never heard much about the ozone layer after that.
What has the hole in the ozone layer got in common with global warming? The eco freaks took the whole ozone layer agenda, changed the name to global warming and used it to screw us again. Now that global warming has been played out they changed the name again to Climate Change. Same scam - different name. Kinda makes me wonder what they will call the next scam when Climate Change runs out of steam. I know what they should call it. It should be the "Shut up and give me more money and power to fix a problem that doesn't exist" scam. The name ain't pretty but it's accurate.
And you know what? I would give them money if they would just shut up and quit scaring everyone. We should have a 2% shut up and leave me alone tax to pay to the eco freaks. Or we could just kill them. I'm not sure but I think that's illegal. However, I would gladly do the time if I could just be sure I got all of the eco freaks before I was arrested.

Well for one thing we can measure it with instruments known as ozonesondes
http://www.ozonelayer.noaa.gov/action/ozonesonde.h...
As well as satellite measurements
The 'hole' in the ozone layer refers to a place in the ozone layer that falls below a certain concentration. It isn't a 'hole'. Ozone is formed when radiation with wavelengths shorter than 200nm interact with O2 molecules in the stratosphere.
When sections of the Earth are in complete darkness during certain times of the year due to the planets axial tilt, such as Winter in Antarctica, no new ozone is formed and depletion occurs. This is when the ozone hole makes an appearance. As humans emit more and more ozone depleting substances (ODS), such as CFCs and HFCs, the interaction between them and the ozone layer depletes it further during those winter months mention above taking it below the concentration at which point it cane be labelled a 'hole. CFCs were, however, decreased through emissions reduction laws from when the Montreal Protocol was signed in 1987 and for the following years.
http://www.epa.gov/ozone/intpol/
Temperature variations in the stratosphere, formerly showing cooling, have begun showing warming due to the recovery of the ozone layer, which is the main contributor to the temperature of that region, masking the cooling in this region associated with increasing tropospheric greenhouse gases.

Also note that, although ozone is labelled a greenhouse gas, ozone depletion and global warming are two different problems.

The proof was in satellite measurements of ozone which showed a hole had formed. We banned CFC's and this helped with the problem. The hole is still there is just not as bad as it was and will hopefully eventually recover completely.
p.s what does the hole in the ozone layer have to do with global warming?
- Anonymous10 years ago
Ozone depletes when it comes into contact with clorofloucarbons (CFC's), which were widely found in most all spray bottles and in car refrigerant. Since most of these chemicals have been banned in these products then it's less of a big deal now.

We have a pictures of the hole.

... that is this year.
Nearly record size this year.
The Arctic hole *was* a record size.

I am old enough to remember that the ozone layer was the big scare and it would cause a new ice age - so I was surprised to then hear about global warming.
When I was a kid I was told to eat an apple after a meal - it would clean my teeth.
Then later I was told, whatever you do, do not eat an apple after a meal; it will rot your teeth
Then I was told if you eat an apple after your meal, you must clean your teeth.
Then I was told that the acid in the apple softens the enamel and cleaning your teeth after eating an apple is the last thing you should do.
Then I was told to brush my teeth up and down
Then I was told that brushing them down forced food particles into my gums, causing decay
I then found out that decay comes from inside your teeth and cleaning is useless.
Finally, I gave up listening to experts
The same rational applies to climate change except the dangers from expert's lies are much, much greater than losing your teeth. This is seriously damaging to the world's population

There is a hole in the ozone layer but only at the South Pole so don't go sunbathing there...
