I know it equals 1/12 but what is the property used?

    Its simply the division property. You divided 1 by 12 to get 1/12. The property always relates to the action you took to get to the next step :)

    edit: the answer below reminded me of the proper name so here it is: the division property of equality

    "multiplicative property of equality" which says that you can multiply both sides of an equation by the same thing (in this case 1/12).
