How long is the wait to join the Navy ?

I'm writing this for my next door neighbor who doesn't own a computer. I'd appreciate any advice you can share. Her granddaughter is in the process of joining the Navy. Granddaughter (age 22) has filled out all the paperwork, has graduated (with honors) from high school, has no criminal history, is drug free. She has taken the written Navy "test" and got a good (85) score. The recruiter she has been working with says the next step is for him to take her to San Diego for the physical. The recruiter says he will call next week-but never does. It's the same story every week. The girl contacts him once a week and he tells her the process takes a while-to just be patient. The process has been going on for just over 2 months now. The grand daughter is becoming anxious about it because it is taking so long. We know many HS grads are joining the services because there are no job opportunities. What is a realistic waiting period for this ? Most people she has asked say 3-6 weeks. Someone told her yesterday the wait could actually take several months. Any advice or info would be much appreciated. Thanks to all who answer.

Update:

Thanks all. I really appreciate your answers and help.

it can take 6 months just to get to MEPS and sign a contract. then a year before you ship out.

this is the end of the Fiscal year and there is no money to send people to MEPS. additionally they do NOT need recruits very badly so unless she qualifies for Nuke, EOD or CTI they will not be in any rush to get her signed up.

    9 months is average lately

It's true to say that all-in-all, the recruiting process can take several months to complete. However, this is not the WHOLE story. First, if your friend's Granddaughter has absolutely NO criminal history, then her paperwork and processing will take a much shorter time than most. Second, it is very unusual for a recruiter to go on promising to followup each week, with no results. If the girl wishes to get the ball rolling, she can proceed in one of two ways.

    1. The fastest way is to ask for the name and number of the recruiter's Chain of Command (boss). This person is SURE to correct the delay immediately.

    2. If she feels too uncomfortable to do this, she can go to another recruiter OUTSIDE of this recruiter's service area, and go with someone else. This route will take a while since they will have to request that her file be transferred to them.

Ultimately, from the time of taking the ASVAB, to the time of departing for boot camp should be somewhere between 4-6 months. I just joined this year myself, and waited 4 months.

By the way, this girl has an EXCELLENT ASVAB score, and I am surprised that they are not being more serious about her recruiting process. She should ask if she can be scheduled to take the DLAB (Defense Language Aptitude Battery test) when she goes to MEPS to see if she can qualify for a CTI job. She sounds like the perfect candidate to become a linguist. If chosen, she could attend school in Monterey, CA and be trained in one of the BIG 5 languages, and leave the school (Defense Language Institute) with an AA Degree.

Anything up to and including 6 months is normal.
