DVD recorder w or w/o tuner?

I want to buy a DVD player that I can also record to from the TV. Does this mean the DVD unit needs to have a tuner in it?

Without a tuner it can only record what is playing on / through the TV. Set up properly with it's own tuner you could record and watch something else at the same time. You would need a splitter coming from your source cable or Satellite box. Comes in handy with all the new shows being in the same time slot as a returning show you still want to catch. Using a DVD RW disc you can record over and over again.
