1911 or Browning Hi-Power?

I'm starting to get into guns and I would like to purchase one for self defense but I'm not really sure which one to get, I have narrowed it down to two, The 1911 or browning Hi-power. Could somebody help me out? I don't know much about them. Also include a brand if possible. Thanks.

Update:

In Canada it's harder to obtain a license, But I'm actually moving.

Given that they're both full-sized handguns with good reputations for being user-friendly and effective, I'll point out that the Hi-Power has some logistical advantages.

The Hi-Power typically is chambered for the 9x19mm cartridge (aka 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum). This cartridge is often the most economical center-fire pistol cartridge to purchase when loaded with Full Metal Jacket bullets. That means it will cost less money to practice with such a pistol, and proper training followed up with regular practice sessions is important to maintain proficiency.

Also the Hi-Power has a larger magazine capacity. If you encounter a "multiple-target" scenario, the extra magazine capacity will be welcome.

As for the "The .45ACP is more bad-@$$ than the 9mm" argument? People need to get over it. :)

Current 9mm ammunition is very effective when loaded with modern hollow-point bullets.

It's more important to place those bullets in a vital area of your target.

Shot placement trumps the diameter of the bullet.

Being able to place your shot on-target is a skill developed through proper training (and lots of it).

Is there anything "wrong" with choosing an M-1911 .45ACP pistol? No.

Some people strongly prefer its ergonomics and are willing to devote themselves to carrying additional magazines and paying the cost of .45ACP ammunition.

Like I stated, they're both viable options.

Given that they were designed by the same person, I suppose it's only natural. :-)

the draw backs to the browning hi power are, 9mm vs .40 5 acp interior the colt 1911, the severe power has no beavertail grip protection so adult adult males like me with massive palms get "hammerbite" from them. on the plus area, the browning is between the main precise 9mm's I even have ever fired and it carrys plenty greater ammo interior the magazine than the 1911. The 1911 fires a much greater helpful bullet at 230 grains vs the a hundred and fifteen grain familiar bullet for the 9mm. additionally, the 1911 fires the bullet at 850 feet in line with 2nd that's plenty slower than the 9mm. The .40 5 around vacationing slower ability you get a much greater effective flow of power to the objective vs the 9mm quicker and smaller bullet which punches genuine on by using leaving a smaller hollow and much less power flow to the objective. the two pistols are very, o.k. made, I even have used the two, and could use the two one in an emergency, IF I have been given to %. the ammo interior the 9mm hi power.

Both are good, but you cant argue with the time proven 1911 design in my opinion. As far as brand, Colts are good or Smith&Wesson.

Both are good, but why not go a little more modern? Look at a CZ 75 or P-01, and the FNP 45 USG or FNX.
