Question for atheists?

Since you expect to be convinced that God exists, let's see a little of your progress in convincing us that God DIDN'T have a hand in things:

The Big Bang Theory is a THEORY. Do you understand what a theory is? Where did the thing that banged come from? Answering that presents another question: Where is your proof that matter always existed (And wasn't created)?

Since fossils represent less than 1% (and THAT'S debatable!) of species that ever lived, when do you think you will have the other 99% to legitimize your claim that God DIDN'T create the earth and all living things on it? I'll be nice: How about 10%!!

Do you think 1% in 2500+ years of atheist history is a convincing record?

I can go on all day. But I will stop here.

I know when atheists get stumped, they tend to answer questions WITH questions as a dodge. They call this Yahoo ANSWERS for a reason! Desperate atheists resort to personal attacks when they can't answer a question.

The 'theists come up short too' argument relegates your set of beliefs to that which you criticize. That clever, but invalid, argument can be found on every other atheist answer here. I'll be nice again: You don't have to answer ALL the questions above.

Pick one!

By the way, I'M NOT CHRISTIAN.

Update:

SOME of the material supplied in this particular question was pulled from links ATHEISTS supplied on this site. For example:

http://www.talkorigins.org/indexcc/CA/CA202.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism

http://www.iamanatheist.com/arguments.html

You would have to be really sophisticated to find inconsistencies in the above links. I think they're garbage.

I'll tell you what a theory is not: PROOF

"The Big Bang Theory is a THEORY. Do you understand what a theory is?"

A scientific theory is an observation that explains several hypothesis. To become a theory it must be tested repeatedly by many people at many times in many places. Any solid evidence against it renders it invalid. It is as close to a scientific law as you can get. Laws are things which cannot be proven or tested because they are self-evident. Gravity is a law, how it works is a theory.

"Where is your proof that matter always existed (And wasn't created)?"

The law of conversation of mass and energy states that neither can be created. Since something must exist forever, it may as well be matter. The alternative is a god who created matter; however, this does nothing to explain creation, as it only adds an unnecessary step to a more simple explanation -without reason backing it up.

"Since fossils represent less than 1% (and THAT'S debatable!) of species that ever lived"

This statement makes no sense whatsoever. How could one possibly calculate the number of species that were made into fossils? Do you have other evidence of their existence? You have misinterpreted whatever you read. The actual statistic should say something more like 'Only 1% of animals get fossilized." As in 1% of each instance of a species, not 1% of each species.

    "How about 10%!!"

You made some kind of leap here, you must be missing some words or sentences, because this and the next sentence don't really make sense.

"Do you think 1% in 2500+ years of atheist history is a convincing record?"

where are these numbers coming from? I already explain why the 1% makes no sense(not that this statement would be coherent otherwise), but what is this 2500? Are you asserting that Atheism started 2500 yrs ago? If so, you are saying that belief in a god came before a lack of a belief in a god. That cavemen were somehow intelligent enough to create an abstract concept of a creator which exists outside of time, before they were unable to? This assertion is ridiculous and makes no sense.

Is this all that you wanted or was I also suppose to make an argument against god?

Theory: A conclusion reached after examination of the available evidence. Currently, the BBT is one of the more popular theories on the formation of the Universe. If new evidence comes along, it may be changed. The difference between a scientific theory and a religious belief is that theories fit the facts, while beliefs ignore them.

I highly doubt we will ever have fossils of even 5% of the animals and plants that have ever existed. However, again, the fossils we do have (that minuscule 1%) do a pretty good job of showing the progression of life-forms from simple organisms to complex ones. They also provide ample evidence that evolution does indeed exist. You may be better off questioning how you can believe that god poofed everything into existence, when even such a small sample shows so much evidence to the contrary.

1% of what in 2,500+ years of atheist history? I wasn't aware that history was atheist.

    the·o·ry (th-r, thîr)

    n. pl. the·o·ries

    1. A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.

    2. The branch of a science or art consisting of its explanatory statements, accepted principles, and methods of analysis, as opposed to practice: a fine musician who had never studied theory.

    3. A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics.

    4. Abstract reasoning; speculation: a decision based on experience rather than theory.

    5. A belief or principle that guides action or assists comprehension or judgment: staked out the house on the theory that criminals usually return to the scene of the crime.

    6. An assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture.

Scientific theory uses specific definition #1. When someone proposes a structure that links several natural laws in a coherent whole, it is following #2, rarely #6. Once accepted, it is following #1 but retains the name of 'theory'.

Do YOU understand what a scientific theory is?

As for where all the matter of the universe comes from, we are working on it. Calculations and mathematical models show that the conditions existing just inside a black hole would create a complete universe, as large and massive as out own, along dimensions that are perpendicular to our own -- find the June 2011 issue of Discover and read it; it is all in there.

As for the very limited recovery rate of fossils (which actually explain why all those "missing links" that creationists insist scientist have to find to prove evolution), I fail to see what it is you are trying to prove. If you ever have played 'connect the dots' as a child, you can perhaps see that a few isolated points could still lead to a fairly good idea of what the overall picture should look like.

Likewise, that you cannot understand something does not mean that other people are equally stumped; you are dealing with YOUR limitations here, not ours.

    Answers:

    1. It is obvious you do not know what a scientific theory is. See here:

    http://www.nebscience.org/theory.html

    2. No one ever said that matter always existed. Time started with the big bang (time and space are not separate, it is part of 'space time').

    3. Fossils require certain environmental conditions to be preserved. Try finding the bones of your great great grandmother.

    4. Atheist 'history' is not 2500+ years, life on earth is estimated to start from around 4 billion years ago.

Rather than go on all day, learn about science instead of reading religious propaganda and you will be able to answer all your own questions.

(by the way, I'm not an atheist either)

to deal with "it's only a theory"

"The formal scientific definition of theory is quite different from the everyday meaning of the word. It refers to a comprehensive explanation of some aspect of nature that is supported by a vast body of evidence. Many scientific theories are so well established that no new evidence is likely to alter them substantially. For example, no new evidence will demonstrate that the Earth does not orbit around the sun (heliocentric theory), or that living things are not made of cells (cell theory), that matter is not composed of atoms, or that the surface of the Earth is not divided into solid plates that have moved over geological timescales (the theory of plate tectonics). One of the most useful properties of scientific theories is that they can be used to make predictions about natural events or phenomena that have not yet been observed."- United States National Academy of Sciences

The fossil portion of your question makes almost no sense at all, the small amount of fossils that we have gathered are still there...by saying there are creatures (99%, even if we trust your numbers) that did not leave fossils, you are stating nothing new or controversial. Also, there is NO EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD. Even if evolution, the big bang, the theory of relativity, and every other scientific law or theory is proven wrong, it makes god no more likely.

    1) The theory that matter always existed is not as much accepted by the scientists as the one that existence itself came from no space and time.

    2) Big Bang is just a theory, doesn't mean it doesn't matter at all. God's existence is also a hypothesis and a very weak one at that.

    3) Not even half of those 1% fossils show that the world was created by God or that humans came from Adam & Eve.

    4) You're a biased, stupid Muslim.

An atheist does not believe in god/s. That's it. That's what atheists are and that is all they are. Some scientists are atheists, some are Christian, some are Jewish, some are Moslems, some are Hindus. In fact you will find scientists in just about all religions except the ignorant fundamentalist ones. Science has nothing to do with atheism and atheism has nothing to do with science.

Do I understand what a theory is? Yes I do. It is obvious that you don't. As far as evolution is concerned you should try learning something about it. A good place to start would be to read The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins (it's evolution for beginners).

"let's see a little of your progress in convincing us that God DIDN'T have a hand in things" -and- "when do you think you will have the other 99% to legitimize your claim that God DIDN'T create the earth and all living things on it?"

There is a fundamental law of logic known as the "Principle of Non-Contradiction," which dictates that one will never be called upon to prove a negative. Both of the inquiries you have presented above are asking the viewer to prove a negative. As brilliant as you are, you still have not come within a country mile of proving that any of the thousands of deities created by humanity have ever existed.

Do you understand what a scientific theory is ?

A scientific theory comprises a collection of concepts, including abstractions of observable phenomena expressed as quantifiable properties, together with rules (called scientific laws) that express relationships between observations of such concepts. A scientific theory is constructed to conform to available empirical data about such observations, and is put forth as a principle or body of principles for explaining a class of phenomena.

You don't need fossils- DNA and the human brain clearly show evidence of evolution

It doesn't matter how many people are or have ever been atheist as that says nothing about what's true i.e. popularity fallacy

A Theory is having facts to back it up....that's why the Big Bang is a theory, it has facts to support it. There is no facts to back up God/Jesus existence....therefore you cannot count the bible as evidence since it has been written my men.

I mean, if some religious person told me that God created the universe and I had to believe that, then that means I would have to believe that God came from somewhere too, right? But no one has any explanation of where God came from. So therefore, it makes sense to me that we came from Matter and Energy. No God existed.
