would you put quotes around something you got from a story and you were going to show it in an essay.
Ex: While playing hide-and-seek, the youngest child, Lucy, discovers the
world of Narnia. She convinces her brothers and sister to journey through
the open back of a magical wardrobe to travel to Narnia with her.

only if you are letting them know it is an excerpt from another book,

If it is a direct quote from a written work, then yes you must use quotation marks. If you do not use them, it is considered plagiarism.
If it is a summary of part of a story in your own words you do not need quotation marks.

No. Unless if you were dictating the exact words as in direct speech. But since you´re narrating what happened using indirect speech, in the 3rd person, the quotes are not used.

yes, you need to put quotation marks if the sentence is directly coming from the book.
