If we share a small percentage of DNA with our "cousin"; that ever-elusive "ape-like" creature; then wouldn't?
you think that the apes of today would be able to at least repeat in a voice what they hear a human speak? Also; what about all the other animals? If humans are animals too; why are we the only ones who form words (other than like birds just mimicking?) I'm not talking about mimicking; but be able to choose a word that they hear over and over and then use it in the correct context. If we all evolved alongside each other; what makes us so different to be the only ones who wear clothes; and the only ones to speak; and the only ones to worship God (well, some of us) I don't think the environment explains it because there are animals who share our environment but they don't sew up a shirt and pair of pants or sit down and write a book. Things like this don't add up with your natural selection/ caused by environment explanations.
@Yetis Exist: Seriously; don't you EVER let your mind ponder these things? I mean, really, if we all evolved; why are there so many unanswered questions like why humans feel things like shame, guilt, embarrassment, empathy, doubt, and why we have a conscience and can experience spiritual things. I mean just stop and think about it for a second. Scientists experiment and make conclusions but we can have some common sense and these things don't make sense.
@ person CALLING himself/herself Jesus Christ (I couldn't even type it the way it was)LOL....Look, I am not claiming to be a scientist or even an expert on evolution. I have studied and I get the gist of what you guys believe, OK? Enough to see that people have so accepted it that they never question anything and if you DO question; they say you are stupid. Well, we SHOULD question it! Some things don't make sense, OK. Wake up and ask YOURSELF if your common sense doesn't see the problems with it.
@Martin G: With all due respect; that is your problem. You think that you HAVE TO accept what someone who has a higher education than you tells you to. You don't. You can ask questions. You can have doubts. You can use your common sense and figure things out for yourself. You don't need to believe something JUST BECAUSE some professor tells you to.
@interest....OK then; TEACH ME....answer my question tell me why I am wrong
@interest; I read your edit and appreciate it and thank you. I know you cannot be thorough here, I get that;but you say these questions have come up and been answered. Are you SURE?
@Michael: I love your answer, truly I do. I love this stuff and thank you for the info. But you still didn't answer about the intangible things, you know? People always say that atheists shouldn't be here on R&S but I disagree. I think you are here because you realize that there are some things your science can't explain. We are NOT enemies, you and I. We are ALL searching for answers. Maybe if we can be honest with each other and not try to show how smart we are but share what we DO know humbly; we can all benefit. You shared your knowledge with me and I am grateful.
@Michael Darnell: I now have two Michaels so I wanted to let you know that my first edit to Michael was to you. OK? The other Michael and I have some history of discussion on this subject. LOL

If evolution were true, we should find mankind in all stages of change everywhere about us, but we do not. The evolutionists dig in the dirt of this planet and they are,"Ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." 2 Tim 3:7
God tells us, that all men have the same blood. This means that blood from all races and ethnic backgrounds can be exchanged, as long as it is the correct blood type.. No matter what a man's race is, when in need of a transfusion, he can receive it from any other human, regardless of race. I challenge the evolutionist, when he is in need of a transfusion, TO GET HIS BLOOD FROM THE APE! Needless to say, the results of such folly would be fatal.
Fins to Feathers. Evolution teaches the fish evolved from lower animals. How did they get fins? No evolutionist claims that fins came in one generation, rather that they came in many generations. The development of fins was a GRADUAL development, they say. And where did birds get their wings? No evolutionist claims that wings came in one generation, but in many generations. They claim that
the development of wings was through a very slow, gradual process. Now, when the process was halfway complete, the fin or wing, as the case may be, would be useless. Good for nothing! A part-fin or a part-wing would be a monstrosity, not a perfect adaptation, such as we see everywhere in nature. NOWHERE IN THE WORLD TODAY CAN ONE FIND PARTLY DEVELOPED APPENDAGES OR ORGANS, but everywhere there is perfect adaptation, perfect development each for its intended purpose. That fact proves that EACH CREATURE, IN ALL ESSENTIAL FEATURES, HAS BEEN EXACTLY AS IT IS NOW, and was so created in the beginning.
It is important to remember that whatever you believe, you will reap the harvest. If you deny God and His account of creation, then you might as well look straight into Heaven, shake your fist in God's face and scream at the top of your lungs that He does not exist; but, if He should, He is a liar because you have decided not to believe His Word in the first chapter of Gen. You may wait for a voice to answer from Heaven, but it never will. He spoke over 2,000 years ago and His words were recorded. One portion is...Gal 6: "Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. You must either believe all of God's Word or deny it all. God does not speak truth in one portion of His Word and speak lies in another.
There has never been one single case of one species changing into another. There are mutations which are governed by the genes, which give us different sizes, shapes, color of hair and eyes, etc. But there has never been one case of transmutation (changing of one specie into another). How could birds survive without wings, if it took millions of years for them to develop? They couldn’t build their nests in trees, as they would not be able to get off the ground to escape their predators. Therefore, there would be no birds today. Consider the mammary glands (breasts of mammals), the
means by which they feed their young. In the millions and millions of years while those mammary glands were developing…tell me, Mr. Evolutionist…how were the young of mammals fed so as not to starve to death? No evolutionists or atheists were ever created or born. They were taught this lie and are now teaching the same. God describes them in Rom 1:21,22,“Because that when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”
God says that He,“Created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Gen 1:27.) God’s answer to the unbeliever is, “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” Psalm 14:1. As for myself, don’t ask me to become a fool to believe in the impossible, because my faith is in the Lord Jesus Christ who made it possible.
The theory of evolution is not new, it's just got a new name to it. People have been worshipping trees and animals for thousands of years, claiming that such are their gods. Is that not what the evolutionist says? He says, "God didn't create me, I came from an animal." Do they not say that a gorilla is their Grandpa? That there is a bird in my family tree? How about a rat? God's answer is in Romans 1:22-23: "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to...birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things."
By the way, the chicken came before the egg. Don't let Satan make a MONKEY out of YOU!

Don't you think it would be a good idea to actually understand something before you make so many erroneous statements trying to show why it's wrong?
You claim all these things are unknown, when they are not and very well known...
There are many things in this world that are considered 'common sense' or 'obvious' by people with no understanding or knowledge and are not...
the world being flat was considered 'obvious' by everybody at one time, do you still accept it? The Earth being the center of the universe was biblical teaching and 'obvious' , do you still accept that?
Questioning is what science is all about, that's why it continually changes when new information is found and provided... The questions you have asked already have answers that you have obviously not seen or refuse to accept... if you think they are wrong, go out and prove it... nothing says you can't... those things that are taught are not something someone just decided to claim one day. They have been verified by many sources. Once again, become a scientist and prove to the world that your 'common sense' is the right answer...
Learn about things, then you may have some of the 'common sense'...
EDIT: To start with we share over 90% of our DNA with other primates. This is measurable and has been proved... Apes don't talk because they have no vocal cords... etc, etc, etc.... Just because you don't accept something doesn't make it wrong. These are answers that others here have already pointed out... they have been extensively studied and verified by people that do these things for a living and what I have been recommending you do... science is based on research, not some one's 'feelings' or 'common sense'... but real evidence...
I am not attacking you and have spent way more time on an answer than I usually do as I thought you may want an honest one, which is what I have done... I have only been suggesting that you find a teacher and learn what is actually known about your questions and why. This is neither the tiome or the place for that...

Do you think that people who are born without vocal cords should be able to speak? Just because they don't share our vocal capacity doesn't mean they are not able to communicate - not everything has the same ability - for example - you cannot run as fast as cheetah or fly like a bird or dive deep and hold your breath for hours like a whale - so why expect an ape to have precisely the same ability as you do. Certainly even though you have a similar body you could not climb a tree as well as a chimpanzee.
Other apes like gorilla or chimpanzee have 1 more pair of chromosomes than humans. Human Chromosome #2 is the result of the fusion of two chromosomes which exist separately in other ape species.
This can clearly be seen in that there are vestigial telomeres in the middle of human chromosome #2. Normally telomeres only exist at the ends of a chromosome (telomeres are a bit like the aglet on the ends of shoelace in that they keep it from being damaged or fragmented) -- also there are two centromeres in human chromosome #2 while all other chromosomes normally have only one centromere.
There have been studies of apes which use sign language - like Washoe and Loulis and Nim --

Capability to use language and understand it rather than just mimicry - is actually something that certain birds have been discovered to be able to do - have you ever heard of Alex the African Grey parrot? Here is a link - http://www.alexfoundation.org/index2.html

In addition to what our knowledgeable friend "interested 1208" posted, evolution is difficult to understand for many and just as difficult to explain to many.
For you to ask such a difficult to comprehend question here on Yahoo shows that you probably will never understand evolution. Because even if some could explain it to you over the net, it would take some doing and seeing you really don't want an answer which conflicts with your points of view, why would anyone bother wasting so much time on you.
If you really don't believe in evolution, none of us will lose sleep!

Human emotion is easily explained through evolution and society, it's not an unanswered question. If you thought for a second about how the capacity to feel emotions greatly benefits your chance of survival or of passing on your genetic material you would realise this.

Words are merely sounds. We are simply more able to make more sounds and more complex arrangements of sound.
Higher apes can be taught a form of sign language or come to understand images they can touch to communicate things. If they had the physical ability to speak in the way that we do it's possible that they would pick up on some of it.

I agree with what you are saying and think it is quite obvious that evolution is wrong, so obvious that it almost makes me laugh but it is also very sad how this world is being so easily duped by the devil.
You said "and the only ones to worship God (well, some of us)" I would revise that because we all believe in something, we all make something our god in this world, whether it is money, prestige, celebrities, we all have something which could be labeled as god of our lives. Other than that I believe you are right on and am happy to know that there are still Christians who are not afraid to defend their faith.

***Things like this don't add up with your natural selection***
Oh, but they do add up exactly.
Here is an example of a question where I really can't tell if the asker really knows so little about the actual theory of evolution or if they are just pretending to to be argumentative and cause a stir.

No, we never were chimps, we never were gorillas nor any of todays ape. We evolved from a completely different animal. Though we are very similar, we are not the chimp, and the chimp is not and never will be us.

Go read a damn science book. I'm an English major and even I know more about evolution than you.

> I don't think the environment explains it because there are animals who share our environment
There are no other animals still in existence that share our particular history of adaptation to our local environment. We are as we are because about 6 or 7 million years ago there was a global cooling trend causing savannahs in Africa to expand and forests and jungles to retreat. The ancestors of chimps stayed in the forests and jungles, whereas our ape ancestors moved into the savannah. All our unique qualities began as adaptations to this new niche and environment. Food and safety from predators in the savannah were no longer as close as the nearest tree. So at the expense of loss of climbing ability, we traded our opposable toes and much of our strength for an improved bipedal gate and greater manual dexterity. We evolved larger brains at the expense of increased childbirth deaths, longer childhood dependence, and greater food requirements (our brains require 20% of our energy intake). Those trade-offs were not worth it for any other species, including apes that stayed in the forests and jungles, but for our ancestors they allowed for coordinated defenses against predators and for the fashioning and use of more and more complicated tools. With the new tools came new food sources, allowing still further evolution of our brains and dexterity. Eventually our tool use and intelligence became so great that what had started as an adaptation to the savannah became generally useful in almost any environment.
This was simply the lucky result of approaching life in the savannah with the pre-existing advantages we had, and of evolving to use them more effectively. By comparison, one could picture some kind of carnivore (for instance) moving into the savannah and evolving somewhat greater intelligence. Without the pre-existing capacity for tool manufacture (and the digestive capacity to take advantage of many new food sources), the disadvantages of extremely large brains would quickly exceed the advantages.
So we won the evolutionary equivalent of the lottery. We evolved to emphasize our preadaptations, as every population moving into a new niche will do. But the result was so effective that it allowed us to flourish not only in the savannah, but almost anywhere on earth.
> wouldn’t you think that the apes of today would be able to at least repeat in a voice what they hear a human speak?
Human language is extremely variable and complicated, and so requires a large brain with well-developed Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas. Because of the drawbacks of large brains mentioned above, other apes haven’t evolved brains large enough to process complicated language. We do, however, see an evolutionary progression from monkeys to apes to humans regarding communication. Monkeys communicate using simple vocalizations and facial expressions; apes add gestures to that, and humans use the previous two methods in addition to formalized language. Furthermore, several gestures (such as the open-handed “begging” gesture) are shared by humans, chimps and bonobos. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/07043...
> why are there so many unanswered questions like why humans feel things like shame, guilt, embarrassment, empathy, doubt
All those things provide advantages in human interpersonal relationships and coalitions. People who lack the ability to feel these things, such as autistic or psychotic individuals, are less likely to leave descendants. Furthermore, those emotions are also present in other living ape species. See, for example, Chimpanzee Politics, or Peacemaking Among Primates, by Franz DeWaal.
