40 yard dash confusion?

Okay here me out. 40 yard dash is timed off of the player's start on turf from a guy standing at the finish line.

Some people time theirs on a track with track cleats on and use this as their 40.

Olympic athletes go off of a gun, which we know sound travels only 1162 ft/s, taking away about .15 seconds from the sound's movement...and then the runner's reaction time.... .25 seconds or so.

So what is the best way to time your 40 to accurately tell your speed?

You will need a buddy to help with the timing but you can do this.

One of you starts at the starting line with the gun and your other arm raised. When you shoot the gun off, drop your other arm. The timer with the stopwatch is at the finish line, and when he sees the arm drop, he starts the watch. Doing it that way will eliminate the time it takes for the sound to travel to the timer.

If you want to eliminate reaction time, about the only way I can think of to do that is to film the sprint with simultaneous timing. After the race, look at the film and determine how much reaction time was involved. Subtract that from the total time to get true time and from there you can calculate your speed.
