2004 Toyota Corolla computer replacement at dealership?
I took my car to Firestone today because it was idling kind of rough. The car runs fine when it's moving. It just feels likes it's going to stall when it is at a complete stop.
The shop told me that I needed a new computer (PCM) and that it could only be replaced at the dealership. They told me that the part alone would cost $600 to $800 at the dealership. This was the result of their computer diagnostic. What options do I have besides going to a dealership? Any help would be appreciated.

Mark *may* very well be right. a simple cleaning of the induction system can be a factor.

however,
firestone is fairly reputable. but to call an ecu/pcm bad, *it* needs to be tested. usually a tedious process with a multi meter. there's no code that says the ecu/pcm is bad. that's a conclusion drawn by a mechanic after it's tested.
many minor things can cause this. IAC-idle air control, MAP-manifold absolute pressure/MAF-mass air flow sensors(app), ignition, EGR, PCV, ETS-engine temp sensor, pressure regulator, CPS-crank position sensor, TPS-throttle position sensor, and EFI.
even a block coolant temp sensor or a t-belt or idler/tensioner issue.
prolly missed something.
have firestone prove to you it's bad. have them show you their test results. or take it to the dealer.

ECU's have an 8 year/80,000 mile warranty (whichever comes first). There is also an SSC (Special Service Campaign) out for the ECU's on Corolla's and Matrix. Go to a Toyota dealer, have them run your VIN on the National Service History database, and go from there. If you are eligible for the SSC, you're covered. If not, as long as you are under the 8/80 warranty, you're covered. Let me know if you need any help.

best thing to do is have the dealer do the diagnostic check first. to me it seems as if the throttle body needs cleaning. try cleaning the throttle body first
