Is Modesto, CA a fun town to live in for a young, single 24 year old?

There's a possibility I might have an opportunity to move to Modesto. I love California, but I've never considered moving to a city outside of LA or San Francisco. Currently I live in a really fun, active town in Colorado.

I'm curious if Modesto is an energetic town for a young person. Does it have a unique culture, are there a lot of young people there, is the town moving forward or is it kind of slow? Thanks!

If you are expecting LA or San Francisco, you are going to find the Central Valley terribly disappointing. Although food production is very important from a practical point of view, the staid agricultural heartland of California is as dull as an Iowa cornfield. There is football, church, and talk radio (and not much else).

Los Angeles and San Francisco are world-class, cosmopolitan cities with lots of ambitious young people.

Poor Modesto can't compete with that.

I moved to Modesto 13 years ago from the bay area. I loved it at first. We could afford a nice home and crime was not as bad. Now I hate it! There is nothing to do close by. I guess I was spoiled in the bay where everything was 30 minutes away. Now it's 1 - 2 hours away. I've watched the crime progressively get worse. I had no idea Modesto is considered meth lab central. I estimate having to live here for another year or two. As soon as there is an open door for us we are out of here.

Modesto is more like Kansas than Los Angeles or San Francisco. There are nightclubs downtown but it is more of a family town. The arts are better represented with the Gallo Center, they symphony, opera and dance companies. The other good news is that the cost of living in the central valley is way less than the big cities on the coast.
