Does an iron supplement cause diaper rash?

My nine month old grand daughter, who tested "slightly anemic" was started on an iron supplement last week and now has a diaper rash, could the iron supplement be the cause?

Hmm, there might be a link, diaper rash is common in babies that age because they are eating more solid foods which changes the consistency and acidity of their stools. Have your daughter mention this to her pediatrician, there may well be something connecting the diaper rash with the iron supplements, and thus linking something to her anemia. I'm sure all is well, but a simple question to a qualified doctor would ease your worries. Best of luck!

There are often additives and preservatives in the supplements. Check the ingredients. Citric acid, for example, is a common preservation, and it gives a lot of babies diaper rash.
