What was the importance of the ancient kingdom of Axum (aksum)?

Why were they important? I'm doing a research project on Axum (Aksum) and i can't find any information on ancient Axum and i can't find anything on why they are important! Please help!

    The Kush kingdom, when it fell into decline, was taken over by the Aksum Kingdom in 300 CE. During this century it became a Christian State. I believe basically this is what you are looking for: the Aksum kingdom introduced Christianity to Africa.
