Are evening plays typically formal or semi-formal?

I'm going to see the play Dracula in a few days. I haven't been to an evening play since I was six so I'm not sure how formal to dress. I'm planning on just wearing khakis and a sweater, assuming that sounds appropriate?

In previous times, between the 1700's and the early 1900's it was very important to dress up to go to the theater (a play). That's mainly because only the upper class could usually attend.

Today, it's not the same way really - you don't see all the wealthy people at a play or musical, it's usually middle-class families, couples etc. (I'm not stereotyping, just suggesting) So the dresscode has dropped quite a lot.

That being said, however, many people do still dress up to attend performances. It's fun, and it's a good excuse to look really nice. It's not a must, of course, but if you want to, go for it.

    Hope you enjoy your show!!

Yes! What you're planning to wear sounds great! Whenever you go to the theatre, you should always dress up to show respect, but not the extremity of buying a tux! This isn't the Tony's or anything. Hope you enjoy the place! It's a good one!

when going to the theater(unless it is a school play) always dress up a bit. what you plan on wearing is fine! usually community is a little more semi-casual but something like the Pantages is a little more formal but all in all as long as you not wearing ripped jeans and flip-flops i think you will be fine :) i love going to the theater and using it as an excuse to wear heels or a nice dress.

Honestly, it depends on what type of theatre it is. If it is a professional adult theatre or possibly even a youth theatre, then typically you would dress up a bit, business casual is usually fine. (Like what you're planning on wearing.) If it is a school show, then the attire isn't all that dressy.
