Need help with housing, please?
My husband and I are currently renting an apartment in Ann Arbor, MI. We have to have roommates because we cannot afford to live there by ourselves. This is straining on us in many ways and we would like to find somewhere to live by ourselves when the lease is up. The lease is up at the end of April. When should we start seriously looking for another place? I have found a few that we are interested in, but they will probably be gone by the time we are ready to move.
The reason it is so hard for us to find a place is, first, we don't make much money. We also have a dog, a cat, and fish. The dog is a red Doberman, he is nice, but most places who say they are pet friendly will not accept him and there is no way we are getting rid of him. I also have two ten gallon aquariums and a 42 long, which is very heavy when full. Should we focus on finding a house or condo to rent and stop wasting time on apartments? Or, should we try to do a rent to own on a house? I am just looking for some advice. Maybe there is someone else who has been in a similar situation.
I was thinking about trying a mobile home park, but I grew up in one and I don't think the floors could hold that much weight.
I guess I am looking now because I am very frustrated with my current situation. The apartment we are at now is $855 a month, not including utilities.

The rents in some areas where you are is less than $700 a month. I found some on Craigslist in Ann Arbor.
You start looking the month before you are ready to move. Be sure you give 30 days notice in writing on April 1 to move by April 30. Then you can take a place any time after April 1 even if they overlap. That way you can take your time moving into the new place while paying both rents. Or, just move out one day and in the next. That is so far away, why are you asking now?
You might find a second job by then. No, you cannot give up your Dobie for adoption, there are too many dogs out there homeless. With a condo you deal with an owner directly and I like that better. He may be amenable to the dog and fish tank instead of a faceless management company with a robot leasing agent.
Rent to own is not a good idea. Something usually goes wrong with that. If you cant afford an apartment for $600 how can you afford a house, except out in the boondocks.
Check with United Farm Agency anyway for cheap rura properties.
BTW, rentals in Ann Arbor are half of what I pay in California near the coast.
