How to do exponents when they're next to a variable and coefficient?

If the problem was 5x^2, and x was 4, would you

-square 4 and then multiply it with 5

or

-multiply 5 and 4, and then square the product?

Thanks!

    (5x)^2 =

    (5 * 4)^2 =
