Not a good idea. You have to think about other things you'll need to buy: ribbons and medals for your dress uniforms, new utilities when/if you get a hole in a pair, boots when you need new ones, meals and drinks with your boys (don't say you'll never go out b/c you will) replacement gear when/if you lose a piece of yours. Lunch at Mc'D's or whatever is on your base when your higher ups won't let you go for lunch when the chow hall is open b/c you're working, cleaning supplies for your barracks room, new running shoes when you need them--do you plan on ever saving money for after you get out? Having a car payment at anything under E-4 is a crap idea. I've seen it destroy the financial status of many of the Marines in my platoon. Get a more affordable car and set aside your want of a sporty looking car for now. If you want a nice car, make it a gift to yourself when you reach NCO (or whatever they're called in the Navy) and can afford it.
EDIT: here-top 10 cars under 10k
Source(s): former USMC NCO 2005-2010 I saw this crap happen all the time-junior enlisted buying a vehicle they can't afford on their pay and asking me or other NCO's for money for food or uniform items. - NWIPLv 710 years ago
Not a good idea, your pay after taxes & deductions will only be around $1000 a month, your insurance because you are most likely under 25 can be $200/$300 a month especially if it is a 2 door car. While it is good to get a used car you do need to look at what the monthly payments including insurance, gas, etc.. will be. You also need to have decent credit, that can take time if you don't have any now. Look for something used yes, under $10K is better if you can do it. Plus you could be stationed overseas in which the car would be sitting in storage for up to 3 years waiting for you to come back.

Long answer- It all depends on loan terms. How many months is the loan? What is the interest rate? How much is sales tax? How much to register and tag it? How much are property taxes in that state? How much can you put down up front. How much is your insurance? Will you even be allowed to have a car when living on base? How often will you want to go off base? Budget for gas, food, entertainment.
Short answer- Probably not.

NO.....
Your only making about $1400 a month.Between car payments, insurance & gas your going to be broke the day after pay day. When sea duty time comes, What do you do with it for 6-9 months?
Find a cheaper ride.....

depending on where you get stationed you may not even be ALLOWED to own a car. can't in Japan, for instance unless you are at least an E5( or married with command sponsored dependents).
