My chainsaw will start but won't run. please help?

I have a Poulan Woodshark model 1975 that will start but won't run. I know what I'm doing when it comes to motors but I am compleatly stumped on this. It stope running last year sometime and I replaced the plug and it still wouldn't run. It sat all winter so i decided to work on it the other day. I replaced all the fuel lines, the primer bulb, the fuel filter and rebuilt the carburator, I also checked and rechecked the magneto gap at 16 thousands of an inch. I went to start it and it starts right up, and it runs at unusally high RPMs when there is no pressure on the throttle what so ever, then it died out inbetween 5 and 15 seconds. I have repeated this serveral times and I have gotten the the same results. Can somebody please help? Thanks.

listen to rempen, he said it all and is a very comprehensive answer. However, you said you rebuilt the carburetor. Did you uses a carburetor kit with new diaphragms?

The first thing to check for is air leaks. Any air leak between the carburetor and the engine will cause running issues. Some saws have a flexible boot between the carburetor and the reed box. If that boot is cracked it won't run right. The engine must have compression also. If the rings or cylinder are worn you won't have enough compression. You will need the maker's specs to check that. Also if the main seals on the crankshaft are worn you will have air leaks into the crankcase which will cause running issues.

Have you changed the air filter? I think there is an electronic module on chain saws and mowers. The module may have died.
