Amazing books with intricate plots and deep characters?
Does anyone have a list of amazing books that have intricate plots and deep character development? I love the intertwining of sub-story lines with complex people who add so much depth to a book. Anyone have any suggestions? Even suggestions to just books that you can never shake from your mind, though they may not have the best of plots or the most interesting of characters would be nice! I'm dying for some good literature. Please no Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc. Already read most.
Thanks!

My two favorites for many subplots intertwining around a central timeline are Harry Turtledove's Southern Victory series:
How Few Remain (1997)
The Great War Trilogy
American Front (1998)
Walk in Hell (1999)
Breakthroughs (2000)
The American Empire Trilogy
Blood and Iron (2001)
The Center Cannot Hold (2002)
The Victorious Opposition (2003)
The Settling Accounts Tetralogy
Return Engagement (2004)
Drive to the East (2005)
The Grapple (2006)
In at the Death (2007)
and George R R Martin's Song of Ice and Fire
A Game of Thrones 1996
A Clash of Kings 1998
A Storm of Swords 2000
A Feast for Crows 2005
A Dance with Dragons 2011
These series were both very fun to read (Martin's series isn't over yet, there are two books still being written) and conform to the type of writing you were asking about.

The Night Circus. It's a rare book that can live up to advance buzz of the sort "The Night Circus" has been getting. The prose is beautiful - not too verbose, not too simplistic. Morgenstern has the rare ability to describe her fantastical imaginings in a way that is easily accessible. Reading "The Night Circus. This book dragged painfully in the middle, piling details and uninteresting characters on top of each other until I was literally counting down the pages.

You might want to check out the His Dark Materials trilogy, the Wind on Fire trilogy, the Gemma Doyle trilogy and the Hunger Games I've heard is really good, though I haven't read it myself.

You might have read them, but if you haven't, check out 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' trilogy by Steig Larsson.
