ice maker not working?
whirlpool side by side. icemaker not letting water in. im a hvac tech so i can test. there is a 4 wire plug. black and white for the 120v green ground and a brown that goes to the solenoid valve. i can jumper black to brown and the solenoid opens an d lets water in so solenoid must be good. i tried a different ice maker that i know is good and the same thing. why wont icemaker send power to solenoid when it cycles?
i said i am a hvac service tech. im not so stupid as to not know if the handle is up. i can put water in and it will freeze and harvest the ice but wont put water in to make more. someof these people should learn more before answering questions!
thanks brb. i jumpered the 2 pins and the ice maker ran and i had voltage on v and n which goes to the water valve but not water. if i unplug the ice maker and jumper the black hot wire and the brown wire the water valve will energize and let water in. so i would think the water valve must be good i will do some more test. your info was very helpful

on whirlpool icemakers there's a plastic cover over the motor assy that you can pop off. in the side by side, there's a 1/4 in screw on the bottom right side that holds the wire harness cover on. after that you just slide it out towards you. the cover is on your left side. after that, you'll be looking at a geer and a series of holes. the two on the bottom and toward your right, that are closer together than any other two holes, are the two you jump with a piece of wire. if you've got voltage going to your icemaker, and it doesn't go into a harvest/refill cycle, then your icemaker is bad. the arms should at least go around without making any loud noise. at the end, it'll send 120v to your water valve solonoid. if you take your model number and put it into searspartsdirect.com you can look up the model number for your icemaker (about 100-150 bucks) or your water valve assy (50-80 bucks). also, some models run the icemaker water through the water filter. when's the last tiem you've changed it?
edit: on a lot of models, if the door is open, the icemaker won't cycle. just tape the door switch closed while you're checking it.

There are two common reasons for no water to the tray.
A) The maker itself is not sending a signal to the fill solenoid. This can happen if the stop arm is up, the switch is in the off position or the unit itself has gone bad. These things happen.
B) The fill solenoid is getting a signal but it not passing water due to a clog. Or it is bad and not opening to allow water to flow to the tray. A new solenoid is cheap and easy to install. (especially for an HVAC Tech)
A universal Ice Maker Kit is $110 or so and comes with all new parts. So if your maker is say 10 years old it may be cost effective to go that route.
Good luck.
