The usb port on most newer tvs is primarily for jpgs and mp3s.

Your other options would either a game console or a dvd player with a usb port.

Found one on amazon for $35. In either case the optimal format is mp4.

I've encoded over 1500 dvds and vhs tapes to that format and have played flawlessly.

undesirable theory. some television's help you inspect jpeg photos. One guy right here had his son destroy his television through plugging a flashpersistent into the USB port it fairly is barely for firmware enhancements. Even the television's that do help you view videos in easy words help a million or 2 codecs. What you want is a small gadget referred to as a "Media Server". the straightforward ones like the WD television HD have a USB port on one part and a HDMI jack on the different. It performs WMV, WMV-HD, AVI, MPG, FLV, MKV, - very nearly each thing except RM. those instruments initiate at about $one hundred and bypass up in case you upload outfitted-in hardpersistent, streaming out of your computing device or prompt connections for your computing device. The cool section is the firmware continues to be up thus far for each of the diverse report kinds (something you wont discover on a television) and those field's artwork on any HDTV.
