TF2 (Steam) - How do I lower "Ping"?? PLEASE HELP?

I keep trying to play Team Fortress 2 on Steam, and my Ping is REALLY high!

It used to be regular, between 1 and 20 or so. Now it will reach over 900.

What exactly is Ping and how can I lower it?

I've looked for answers elsewhere but they don't really give a clear answer.

Please help!!

Ping is the delay in miliseconds it takes data from the server to reach your computer, and for data from youjr computer to reach the server

The lower it is, the better. The easiest way to lower it would o be connecting to another server, prefereably one that is closer to you physically.

The other guys have explained what ping is, so I won't go into that.

If it's dramatically gone up all of a sudden, then that means you are probably capped. Just wait until your downloads cycle has restarted and you should be fine. Other ways to help it is to not be downloading anything. That means FULLY closing any programs open in the background that may be downloading things. Also, try connecting to servers that are nearer to you geographically.

"Ping" or "Latency" as it's sometimes called, is the time it takes to transmit data from your computer to the server the game is hosted on. Put simply, the higher the ping, the more time it takes for the computer to register your keypresses. To lower ping, make sure that you are not downloading anything or running programs that use up Internet. If that is not the problem consider switching Internet providers or investing in a better plan.
