How many molars do you REALLY need?
I have only two working sets of molars on my right side (the back-most and the front-most) and a full set, including a wisdom tooth on my left. The wisdom tooth needs an expensive root canal, so I'm considering just having it extracted, because it will be covered by my insurance. Will just 5 sets of working molars be enough so that my chewing won't be inhibited? Or is it worth the extra $500 to keep the tooth?

Molars are very important they do all the chewing. However a molar can only chew if it has an opposing molar that lines up with it (1 on top 1 on bottom).
Its always best to save as many natural teeth as poss able.
But remember once a tooth is root canaled (no nerve or blood supply in tooth so it gets brittle) it needs a crown. Most insurance plans only pay for around 1/2 of the crown which is around $1000.
So don't bother root canalling if you don't plan to crown the tooth.
