Did you build your own home? I want a dome.?

I am planning to have a custom home built and am curious about other people's experiences with being the owner/contractor on a home build. I have enough background knowledge to know the required permits and the order of the subcontractors. I also know that it is not an easy thing.

If you built your own home, is there anything you would change about the process?

Did you hire a general contractor for over-sight?

Did you pay in milestones but pay out to the sub contractors yourself or let the general contractor make those payments?

How far over budget did you go?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

does the lack of response mean no one has built a house or just that no one has read the question?

I've been involved in building homes, My brother was the general contractor. Domes are a specialized type of house most contractors don't have any experience with. If I wanted one I'd higher a contractor who specializes in geodesic domes.
