Optimize computers performance based on task. (windows 7)?

I would like to optimize my computers performance for what I am using it for at a single point in time. For instance I'd like to be able to use Skype or Netflix without having other processes running in the background, just what I need to keep them running and basic functionality. But then be able to play minecraft and disable unnecessary processes without disconnecting my MC server, which should be disabled when I'm streaming video. In other words: multiple configurations would be ideal. Is there an easy way to do this? Is it possible to have different configurations hooked up to hotkeys or desktop icons or something? I am running windows 7.

    go in to component services

and switch all un-necessary processes from automatic to manual

that way, they will only start when you want them to.

That's completely unnecessary in a modern computer. The single thing that might help would be to max out the available RAM for your computer.

We did this a lot in the old days of 640Kb RAM and slow processors, but today's multi-core processors and huge amounts of RAM just don't need this kind of tweaking.
