Boxing forum: What is the WBC doing now?
I was really please with the WBC earlier this week for getting the Hopkins/ Dawson decision right, until I read this...
http://ringtv.craveonline.com/rumors/articles/1696...
The WBC is now ranking Devon Alexander the #1 contender for Floyd Mayweather's WBC Welterweight Championship. 2 problems! ONE, Devon has never fought at 147. TWO, in his last 3 fights Devon won a questionable hometown decision to Kotelnyk, lost a unanimous decision to Bradley (his 1st official professional loss) and the won a questionable hometown decision to Matthysse. This doesn't sound like a guy ready for Floyd.
Any thoughts?
Bonus fact...Devon left Don King recently for Golden Boy.
Crazy too is the fact that this same WBC made Tim Bradley (who beat an undefeated Alexander in the ring) their Jr Welterweight champion in recess.

I can't think of ONE reason Floyd Mayweather would want to fight Devon Alexander. I can think of a half-dozen fighters Mayweather could face. There is absolutely NOTHING to gain, for Mayweather, by fighting Alexander.
With guys like Sulaiman and De la Hoya involved, the WBC is becoming more and more the joke that the WBA has been for years. I imagine that Floyd would like to keep the WBC belt. I think his only real use for the belt is for bargaining power, for a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao. However, I doubt the WBC can force Floyd to take a fight with Alexander. He has nothing to gain, not even money, because he could earn much more against a long list of other fighters.
A fight with Alexander would not even be marketable. Sure, it would be an easy pay-day for Mayweather. He might take a larger percentage than he would against anyone else, because Alexander would still earn more than he would against anyone else.
I just don't see Floyd taking this fight at all. I think, even the WBC can't be THAT stupid. I think it's just a ploy to market a fight between Alexander and Ortiz. I believe they are thinking that a win for Ortiz, which is likely, would put him in a better position for a rematch against Mayweather, which is the most money they can make from Ortiz.
I want to think that they can't even be serious about a proposed fight, but, with guys like De la Hoya and Sulaiman, they might just think the public is THAT stupid. They might try to sell you sand in the desert.
I don't see Floyd taking this fight at all. Time will tell what their real motive is.

This is the first I hear about this thanks for providing the news article. Devon
Alexander being ranked number one by the WBC in the Welterweight division
can not be correct for a few reasons. Number one Devon Alexander he hasn't
even fought a single bout at Welterweight yet. From what I've been reading up
on is that Devon Alexander left DKP and just signed a new contract deal with
Golden Boy Promotions that's old news. Now his first fight is going to be with
"Vicious" Victor Ortiz at Welterweight I disagree with the WBC sanctioning in
ranking Devon Alexander number one in the world at Welterweight. Devon lost
his WBC Junior Welterweight belt to Timothy Bradley and he won a very close
controversial decision over Lucas Matthysse. One of the main reasons that he
decided to move up to Welterweight was because his was losing mass muscle
and was having difficulty making the 140 weight for fights so, even though he is
a smaller fighter he's going to make the best out of his opportunity to compete
at (147) Welterweight. I personally think that Andre Berto should be ranked #1.

The WBC made the right decision in Hopkins/Dawson as it should've been a draw or no decision. But they also should issue a rematch. The loss still remains on Hopkins' record, if I understand correctly only the California state athletic commission can overturn that.
Devon shouldn't be #1 contender, but that kind of messup is almost expected from alphabet belt organizations. WBC can't rank Pacquiao, Berto, Mosley, etc. because they are ranked by other sanctioning bodies. Still he has never fought at 147 except very early in his career. Amongst those in the WBC's list, I'd rather see Mike Jones as #1 since at least he's a true 147lber. Devon would be a tuneup for Floyd if they fought.

Alexander isn't ready for Floyd Mayweather. Alexander's last 3 fight were all losses in the eyes of many fans. he has never fought at Welterweight and hasn't really done anything impressive at jr. Welterweight. Why the WBC ranked him #1 Contender is beyond me. I can't even imagine Floyd taking that fight. Even Mayweather fans would not give him any credit for taking that fight.

Yet again the WBC proves themselves to be in bed with Golden Boy Promotions. They stripped Timothy Bradley earlier this year to give Erik Morales a chance to win a title in his forth different weight class, and now this.
I don't see Floyd taking this fight, I think Amir Khan's his next opponent. A Mayweather/Alexander fight would be an impossible sell to hardcore fight fans, and I think Floyd's smart enough to know that. Or at least I hope he is.

This is the same thing when they stripped Sergio Martinez of the title but have a gift title to Alvarez and Chavez Jr. Then they also sanctioned the Pacquaio Margarito. Im not surprised how corrupt WBC is.

Mayweather wouldn't fight Alexander any way, so the WBC should just give u on this little scheme.

It's starting to get really bad isn't it? I imagine it had something to do with a metric ton of money since we've established that you don't need to actually have fights, never-mind wins, against the top in a weight division to qualify for a title shot. David Haye, Manny P. Bernard Hopkins and many many others have qualified for title shots in weight divisions without actually fighting thier way through the top ten because they have big enough names to make big money fights which is what matters to the alphabet soup organizations. It's enough to make you bitter.

GBP with WBC = FIXED FIGHTS...
Those guys are killing BOXING...
Everyone wants to see Mayweather/Pacquiao but even the boxing governing body doesnt want to match the two fighters....What a shame....

All of the alphabet soup title's are a joke these days, who are champions are not important these days it is who you fight and beat
