why French toast? could it not be Irish,German. Chinese? Why French?

    Because that method was originally used by French to save stale pieces of bread, and was called "pain perdu" ("lost bread")...

    Excellent question!

    Irish toast is made from potatoes.

    German toast is made from Sourdough/Rye.

    Chinese toast has things I can't even pronounce in it.

    FRENCH TOAST is a recipe using French style baking with bread much different than other countries.

    You may still make it with any bread type but, it wouldn't be as good.
