The above poster is right in saying that EMT + MA programs aren't degree programs, but I wouldn't cut them out entirely. I'm going the Physicians Assistant route and the fact that I've been working as an EMT full time while in school has actually helped me experience wise and on paper.

I suggest doing some research on opportunities in the medical field and keeping an eye on income and also important, reviews from professionals that work in the field. Seeing/ reading first hand from people that are happy with their jobs is a good sign. I've been pouring through the internet the past year or so trying to get a grasp on how happy PAs are in their profession.

It seems like you're interested in working in a direct clinical setting, you should try and contact schools/ hospitals and see if you can shadow someone. I've had people shadow me while worked in the ER and working as an EMT pre hospital. For some people, it's very inspiring and motivational, for others... they realize it's not for them. No shame in that at all, much better to find out before your rent and sanity depend on it.

There are no short cuts, to get good money working in the medical field you have to be strategic. It sounds like you're interested so you should enjoy the scenery on the way. Work hard and good luck!

EMT and MA are not majors- they are certifications for a career often given by a technical school- not by a 'real' college bachelors degree program.

Good Bachelor degree programs for people interesting in the medical field include:

    -Bioengineering (very high in demand)

    -Genetics

    -Nursing

    -Biochemistry

If you want a career that offers the abilty to move up in your career and get promotions, I suggest that you avoid any programs like EMT, MA, ultrasound tech, pharmacy tech. Those careers do NOT offer you the ability to get promoted without going back to school.
