Is it hard to find entry level jobs in medical coding and billing?

I am finishing out my time in the Navy and have been searching for lucrative job prospects to obtain a degree in. I'll be up front and say that I am exhausted from the military and am seeking a good comfortable job that will give me time with my family.

I am interested in Medical coding and believe the schooling for it will not be an issue for me. I am more concerned about landing a job once I am certified. I do not wish to be unemployed and searching for years if you can understand that. Every post regarding this question is over a decade old so I am looking for more up to date experiences. Thank you.

Coding is alright, but more and more of it is being automated. As electronic health records improve, the need for an army of coders is decreasing.

If you are interested in the intersection of health care and computers, look more broadly into "health informatics." That covers coding/billing and much, much more. Get an impression of the broad health informatics space, then look into how you want to get into that space as a career path.

its becoming (and in many places already is) automated with the EMRs, and 1 coder can over look hundreds of charts that way. It would be extremely tough to be a solo person with this job now, you would have to join a company that provides this and that may be hard too.  Its no longer the "lucrative: field it used to be. Do some very diligent research on this and dont believe the job hype the schools tell you. I would look at other career prospects as well, depending on your skill set.

Medical coding is a fairly good job now.

Just so you know, though, it is becoming automated.
