What happens if my ears don't pop?

I'm going to Italy in about a week or so and it'll be my first plane flight ever... my brother went on a plane to Spain, and to Miami, a few years back and he says his ears didn't pop and he was in the most uncomfortable pain of his life...

I know all about the "hold your nose and blow into your mouth" thing... but when I do it, it honestly seems like my head is about to explode and I bail out of trying to do it - for fear of busting a blood vessel, heh.

Either way, kinda curious to know... what's going to happen? Any serious medical conditions I should be aware of? Will the pain / tedious feeling go away once the plane lands and the pressure stabilizes?

Or will I die? Nah, I joke... just a little heads up / information about it would be great. Thanks all.

If your ears don't pop, increasing pressure will build up behind the eardrums, potentially causing a great deal of pain if it gets severe. Usually your ears feel plugged and you can't hear well, and it might hurt mildly. In the worst case, though, the eardrums can rupture, which relieves a lot of the pain but causes serious hearing impairment that can take months to heal (sometimes there is a bit of permanent impairment as well).

The hold-your-nose maneuver actually does work, especially when the airplane is descending towards its destination (a part of the flight during which a lot of people have problems with blocked ears). There is some risk if the maneuver is done very aggressively in a person with certain types of cardiovascular disease, but usually it's harmless. When it is successful, it protects the ears against pressure changes. Divers use it, too.

The important thing is not to fly if you have a cold or other upper respiratory infection (or ear infection, sinus infection, etc.), because this greatly increases the chances of your ears getting "stuck" with pressure changes. Sometimes a decongestant helps.

There is no threat to your health other than the possibility of a ruptured eardrum in very serious cases. The pressure differential will eventually resolve on its own if your ears don't pop during the flight. It can really hurt terribly when the ears get blocked, though.

Investigate the city that never sleeps and is obviously abuzz with activity. This city is Mumbai! Find it with hotelbye . Mumbai is in all ways a mega-city driven by energy, wealth, glamour and popularity which attracts persons to provide form for their desires and aspirations. Mumbai can also be an area with powerful old hyperlinks, wonderful British structure, museums, beaches, places of praise, and especially, a true universe of stars where Bollywood reigns supreme. You can't visit Mumbai and not have enjoyment on its beaches and both hottest beaches will be the Juhu Beach and the Chowpatty Beach.

Lol, you'll be fineee. I go from newark to new delhi each year. You dont have to hold your breath or anything. Its not a painful pop, its just some air pressure being let go off. You can avoid it by chewing gum. I promise you wont die

I fly all the time to go on vacation or see family over seas, Some thing that always helps me is chew gum they say chewing helps move your ears or something like that and they should naturally...pop

    hope it helps!!!

They will, and if they don't there is a way to pop them.

    1. Fill your cheeks with air

    2. Pinch your nose

    3. Force air from your mouth, up into your ears

It happens really fast, and it works.

    Good luck!

    You certainly won't die.

I've never heard of anyone having this problem. I haven't, and I've flown loads of times.

But maybe you're right, and your head will explode.
