How do I ask a doctor to rule out ADHD?

I've basically been innatentive all my life and it's slowly been affecting my life, but has been kind of shadowed by how I've excelled in most aspects of my life.

I've asked my parents before to have me tested for AD/HD, but they strongly refused, maybe because of my school performance and the fact that I wasn't hyperactive.

Today I'm a 20 year old university student, and I still have the same spacing out, daydreams, inability to read more than a few lines without getting distracted, and terrible organization. My brain feels like a bee hive of information that I'm trying to sort out constantly. No history of stress, depression, or any other related psych problems.

My problem is that I'm seeing a university DOCTOR who deals with psych problems. This doctor probably gets a lot of stressed students who waste her time, and I don't want get generalized with that bunch.

How do I convince the doctor that this problem is serious, and to rule out the possibility of ADHD or any other disorder?

the doctor knows your problem is serious and she knows you don't have ADHD or any other learning disorder.

don't worry. if you didn't have ADHD as a child, you certainly don't have it now.

You are quite articulate and the doctor will answer you straight up. If your not feeling comfortable with this doctor tell them. Frankly I had 2 bipolar daughters go thru college and they also took advantage of the bipolar guy on campus that helped them when they got stuck in situations that made them feel out of control in college. Ask about that group person at your university. ps doctors will hear you and just be as honest as you are here, they are highly educated and use them! In the end its your duty here to figure out how to study or lose this educational opportunity and do the trade school thing which if you get in a (journeyman situation can be lucrative), and more hands on and less books. ps I like the Mother Theresa prayer novena short and helpful! Its called, "Jesus My All in All" found on line! Say it nightly. Very powerful! hugs!

There are many natural ways to help improve your focus. Ginseng tea before reading, studying, or taking a test for example. Also, surprisingly smoking does help your brain to focus.

Just curious...have you made your appointment or talked to the doc yet? I am thinking of asking my doc about it as well and was wondering what u learned from the doc by asking...were they receptive? Any advice?
