Can i put in a graphics card and not use it?

I will be getting upgrading from my integrated "ATI Radeon HD 4200" in my HP p6703w to an XFX Radeon hd 6850. I will be able to get the graphics card next month when my mom gets her H&R block check but i might have to wait until christmas to upgrade my power supply from the stock 250w to a 500w. So would i be able to put the graphics card in the computer and not use it until then? or should i just leave it in the box.

Leave it in the box, otherwise the power required by the graphics card will shut your entire computer down. 500w is even a little light, 600w is more ideal. As tempting as it might be to throw the new one in, you will be without a computer until Christmas if you do.
