5a^2 - 14 = 3a
5a^2 - 3a - 14 = 0
5a^2 - 10a + 7 a - 14 = 0
5a (a - 2) + 7 (a - 2) = 0
(5a + 7) (a - 2) = 0
so 5a + 7 = 0 or a - 2 = 0
5a = -7 ............a = 2
a = -1.4 or 2

5a^2 -3a - 14 = 0 (get them all on the same side, then put them to zero.)
a = 5, b = -3, c = -14 (give a, b and c the value stated)
Then put it in the quadratic formula (seen here: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=quadratic+formula... Sorry for long link!)
It comes down to x= (3 + square root of 289) / 10
or x= (3- square root of 289) / 10
Which is 2, or -1.4
I hope I helped, it's hard to explain the quadratic formula on here.

assuming equation is
5a^2 - 3a - 14 = 0
by quadratic formula where a= 5, b = -3, c = -14
x = (-b +/- √(b^2-4ac)) / 2a
x = (-(-3) +/- √((-3)^2 -4(5)(-14))) / 2(5)
x = (3 +/- √(9 - (-280))) / 10
x = (3 +/- √289) / 10
x = (3 +/- 17) / 10
x1 = (3 - 17)/10
x1 = -14/10
x = -7/5
x2 = (3 + 17)/10
x2 = 20/10
x2 = 2
THEREFORE x= -7/5, 2
