The Medical Assistants I work with in an OB/GYN office bring the patients back from the waiting room. They get vital signs, take patient history/reason for visit, do urine dipstick on specimens, fill out Pap smear and other specimen requisition forms (and get those ready with the specimen for the lab courier), draw blood, put patients on fetal monitors for non-stress tests, assist the physician with exams/procedures if needed. Give injections (most often Depo for contraception, some fertility meds, and also Celestone for moms with preterm labor signs and symptoms). They also do some phone triage and if not busy, help out with filing and appointment reminder calls.
