Has anyone ever eaten Rutabaga?

I got a rutabaga yesterday, thinking I could carve a jack o lantern into it. Big mistake. You need a hacksaw or jackhammer to get into one of those babies, so I smashed it and threw it into the back yard to see if the deer would eat it. Just out of curiousity, I tried a bit of it and it actually tasted quite a bit like carrot. It wasn't half bad.

Does anybody like it? Have you ever cooked it?

    We call them Swedes (Swede Turnips) and most are use as cattle food. The first meal is that they are allowed to graze on the leaves and then the paddock is ploughed and they eat the turnips.

    Those that get to the market you just cut into chunks and skin with a sharp knife like a pumpkin. Bring to a boil and then simmer just like spuds or pumpkin, or roast as you would pumpkin.

    They do taste quite nice when they are ripe.

    It tastes great when cooked. It is tough to peel, but after peeling it, cut it up into bite sized chunks and steam them until tender. Mash them and mix with some butter or margarine and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

    It's challenging to get them peeled, but one you do they are very tasty. I love them in home made vegetable soup. They can be cooked like a potato and mashed with butter.

    We grow and eat them,they are similar to a turnip but more mild tasting,you can eat them raw or cook like a turnip.

    Yeah, they're great! I like roasting them with potatoes, sweet potatoes, and celery root (celeriac). They taste even better cooked; sweeter and creamier.
