Is eucalyptus dangerous or poisonous to dogs if eaten?

My neighbor's tree is huge and dropped a lot of twigs/balls into my yard last night. (It was very windy). Now my dogs keep trying to chew on them. I know the "nuts" from the eucalyptus are good for getting rid of fleas, but I don't know the properties of the other parts. The "balls" are not the "nuts" (I'm not trying to be obscene or anything, just don't know what to call them, as I don't have the proper name). The little balls are oblong and are in clusters on the branches. Are they just immature nuts? Anyway, the dogs are trying to eat them. Does anyone know if they are harmful to dogs?

Yes, they are harmful to dogs. All parts of the plant are toxic. So please keep the dog out of the yard until you can remove these items.

From the ASPCA Poison Control site:

"Linda, all parts of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) contain an essential oil known as eucalyptol. Essential oils can cause vomiting, diarrhea and central nervous system depression if ingested in large enough amounts. "
