Was Jones Town the ultimate Socialist Society?

Everyone 'shared the wealth'.

No one was allowed to leave.

The elite (Jones) decided the serf’s ultimate fate.

"After the Temple's move to San Francisco, it became more politically active. After Peoples Temple participation proved instrumental in the mayoral election victory of George Moscone in 1975, Moscone appointed Jones as the Chairman of the San Francisco Housing Authority Commission. Unlike other figures considered as cult leaders, Jones enjoyed public support and contact with some of the highest level politicians in the United States. For example, Jones met with Vice Presidential Candidate Walter Mondale and Rosalynn Carter several times. Governor Jerry Brown, Lieutenant Governor Mervyn Dymally, and Assemblyman Willie Brown, among others, attended a large testimonial dinner in honor of Jones in September 1976.

FL Swamp Boy - Quit lying..."In 1951, Jones became a member of the Communist Party USA, and began attending meetings and rallies in Indianapolis."

Being that they starved and lost their minds, yes.

  • If you truly understood "socialism" and "Jones Town", then you would not be so confused to think this at all.

Everyone didn't share equally in things - everything was done for Jim Jones. He was the benefactor in all this - not the society as a whole. He ruled with a twisted view of religion and his psychotic views, not as everyone has equal say and benefits equally in the society. He ran a Theocratic Dictatorship.

There is no one perfect socioeconomic viewpoint to run a nation. The US uses capitalism and socialism. China uses capitalism and communism. Great Britain uses capitalism, socialism and monarchy. The nation that finds the best combination of the socioeconomic theories is going to be the nation that wins.

I wish I could find out where people have this view that Capitalism = Freedom. If you look at the socioeconomic theory of Capitalism in its purest sense, you would find that it is polar opposite of freedom. People seem to want capitalism to equal what they want it to. Capitalism was what slavery in the south prior to the civil war was - slaves worked for shelter, food and were property used for labor; owners benefited financially from the work performed by the slaves. There was NO government regulation of slavery or plantations. Slaves were property - like a horse used to pull the plow in the fields. If this is the capitalism that everyone wants, you are welcome to it. Personally, I prefer to have my rules that everyone has to follow to make sure the playing field is a bit more level.

Leo Ryan, a liberal Democrat, went to Jonestown to try to bring all the people from his constituency back to the states. He was killed by Jones' men. He's the only congressman ever to be murdered in the line of duty.

Jones was just crazy. It isn't a conservative/liberal thing
