Looking for opinions on a Hondo bass guitar?
My grandson has been hinting that he'd like to learn bass guitar. We've been discussing getting him one for Christmas, but I don't want to go overboard on price because I've seen way too many guitars on Craigslist posted by people who bought one and gave it up after a month or two.
So.. I'm looking into a used Hondo (looks like a Series 808) that comes with a small RMS bass amp for $90. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/msg/26293920...
If he shows enough interest, I'll look into a better guitar later. Any opinions on this guitar/price?
One more question.. If I decide to buy a guitar only, would it be reasonable for him to practice with a standard (non-bass) amp? I have 9 amps here in my office/workshop but none are bass amps.
I've been playing rhythm guitar for 48 years, but I've never picked up a bass.

If you've been playing guitar for 48 years, then you know how difficult it is to play a cheap guitar. If you were just beginning guitar, you wouldn't want to start out on a cheap instrument, would you? That being said, you should get the best instrument that you can afford but is still appropriate for your grandson. If he's just starting out, let him use one of your amps at first. He won't hurt it unless he mistreats it and you can concentrate on getting him a decent bass. If he's still a kid with small hands, you might try looking for a short-scale bass.
Just my opinion, but I don't like Hondo instruments at all. Keep looking around and maybe bump up the price you're willing to pay a little bit. Do you know any bass players who might give you some advice?
Hope this helps.

Buy a M&P .45 and a XDS or use the money for both to buy a 1911 from Colt, Kimber or Sig but preferably Kimber. If your not going to take the 1911 route then go with the M&P .45 its superior to all in it's class right next to Sig. I only suggest the XDS as second so you can switch it up and it's also a great carry gun.

You might want to check a local music store first. They often have starter kits that aren't much more expensive, and at least they'll be new and not have a sticker on them.
