how did your parents react to disco?

This is for all the older folks who were around in the 70s at the disco. I think it's such a fascinating time. How did your parents react to the disco crave?

I was a parent when 'disco' came on the scene. My kids weren't hugely impressed and seemed aware it was just 'another phase'. I'd been a long time fan of the Bee Gees so Saturday Night Fever was a given. But all the posturing of wannabe John Travoltas on the dance floor was a quick way for parents to make their children CRINGE with embarrassment.

(He did a good send-up of such nonsense in Pulp Fiction but generally, here in the UK it was just another side issue - along with Punk, Glam-rock and Godnosewot.)

My older children had a healthy upbringing on the Stones, Beatles, Rod Stewart etc - before moving on to Dire Straits, Eurythmics, etc - teaching their Dad a thing or two. The younger ones flirted with heavy metal, drum-beat stuff - but only temporarily.

Nowadays I try to protect Grandchildren from all the hip-hop crappers and latter-day pointy fingered wannabe street poets who can neither sing nor string a sentence of sensible English together. I bought the 16 year-old Grand-daughter a Tim Minchin dvd - much to her mother's misgivings. But beloved g/d wants to do music at Uni and I thought it an essential part of her curriculum. Give it another year or so, I'll lend her my Hoagy Carmichael, Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald recordings.

Little or no 'disco' stuff - which nowadays fades from the memory.

    NO offence meant, of course.

    ; ))

Dad liked music, all kinds of music. He was a drummer in a band in his youth, and loved "the beat" wherever it happened. He was a big fan of the Beatles as I recall.

I do not remember him loving disco, but it had an interesting beat, so for sure, it would not have offended him in any way. They thought John Travolta was an amazing dancer....

We older folks had our kids growing up in the 70's, not ourselves. The 50's and 60's were our time. I loved the disco - my kids were teenagers then and it was great music. "I Love the Night Life" remains one of my "jump up and dance" numbers !

My parents wouldn't allow me to listen to anything but "old" or Christian music.

I LOVED disco - I was around 19 when Saturday Night Fever came out - BOOGIE NIGHTS!

I think they didn't care, their radio was turned on a local country & western station or talk radio most of the time.
