Difference between half of half (times) and Half divided by half?
It is strange that half of a half is a quarter an half divided by half is 1. I realise that one is times and one is divide, but in the real world, if you asked anyone to take half of a cake and divide it by half, they would say you had a quarter, but in mathematical terms....suddenly a whole cake appears!
The operation is reversed I realise, but can someone...in English, not in maths....please explain why?
I think I am getting it........thanks so far to those who have answered.
So, am I right in thinking, if you half a cake, you have two lots of half which = 1
The comment about aspirations means something to me. I am studying life science, I must move my brain from the 'real' world into that of science. I have to be able to visualise the maths, this is very hard when I only have the 'real' world to use in my visualisation. This division thing is getting in the way of my study, I know it is sooooo important and I cannot move any further forward until I can 'see' it happening in my head.

No half of a cake divided by a half isn't a quarter of a cake, a half of a cake divided INTO halves is a quarter which is the same as saying a half of a cake divided by 2. That is to say half of a cake shared equally between two people.
Now if you had to divide BY a half. Let's say you have a cake to to share between two people clearly both people will only get half a cake each, but if only half of those two people want a slice the one that does want a slice gets a whole cake to himself.
hope this helps you visualise it. If you're reducing the number on the denominator of the fraction you're reducing the number of people the whole thing needs to be shared by and thereby increasing the value of the whole fraction.
I have to disagree with the first answer, mathematics is very much relevant to the real world. Sure most people don't need to know about matrices but who do you think designs graphics cards and televisions and builds them - they most certainly need to know about matrices - architects and technical designers need to know and use perpendicular bisectors. How much maths you need in your life is determined by what your aspirations are.

HI! :)
Well half of half simply means that 1/2 times 1/2 i.e. 1/2 x 1/2.This equals 1/4.
now...1/2 divided by half is going to be (1/2) / (1/2). Now when you are dividing a fraction, what you have to do is multiply the numerator by the RECIPROCAL of the denominator. RECIPROCAL is basically the fraction FLIPPED upside down. so 1/2 would be 2/1, which is 2 in simplest forms.
so 1/2 x 2 give us 1.
I take that I didn't even answer you're question lol... but the world of mathematics is very much diverse form the real world. It's like the difference between reality t.v and...well..reality!
I mean take matrixes for example, when do we really use that in REAL life; it's pretty much pointless and irrelevant.
Same with something like a perpendicular bisector. It's not like we go to the supermarket and say "Why, I would like to have the perpendicular bisector of this cantelope."
The real world and mathematics world are two very dissimilar concepts. In fact, most of the things you learn in math are pretty much 'pointless'.
Well, hope I helped in one way or another lol (probably not though)

Math IS practical in the real world!
Half of half is 1/4, which you can find by (1/2)(1/2)=1/4
And as you said half of half a cake is 1/4 of the cake.
Now say you have 3 cakes. If each person gets half of a cake, how many people could you serve?
3 / (1/2) =6. You have divided the cakes by halves.
So if you had 1/2 cake left, and each person gets half of a cake, you could serve one.
If you have half a cake and take half of that, you get 1/4.
But you have divided it by 2, or into 2 parts, not by halves.
Hoping this helps!

Divide can also mean to separate (instead of the mathematical operation of division). That is the meaning being used when you divide the cake in half. You would use the word 'in' not 'by' to mean this. You divide the cake in half not by half.

expensive, does some thing could be suited, for the analogy to paintings? guy is imperfect. How can they be able to conjuring perfection? permit me clarify. you're thirsty. you spot a nil.5-finished glass, you drink it heartily--thankfully enjoying the majority you have been dealt with to. you're thirsty. you spot a nil.5 empty glass... you drink it sparingly, understanding that it's going to quickly be empty and you shall have not got any water to drink; and as a result your temper is foul. ninety 9% of all glasses are empty. which would be authentic, yet what does seeing such lots of empty glasses in a single's life could do with the way one sees a nil.5-empty, or 0.5-finished glass? it quite is definitely in basic terms a term that seperates an helpful individual, from a pessimistic one. in reality it won't additionally be seen in a literal sense!
