In the NHL are you allowed to wear the number 99?

I know no NHL player would ever wear it, I was jut wondering is it because you not allowed to wear it or because it would just been seen as disrespectful?

Bonus Question:

Will the same thing happen with the number 87?

No they retired the number, when a number is retired, an NHL player is not allowed to wear that number.

    Bonus Question:

It depends, if Crosby can keep up what he did pre-concussion, then yes he'll be a star and most definetly have his number retired after he is retired for the Pittsburgh Penguins (teams are also allowed to retire numbers without having the league retire it). I think there is a 75/25 chance that it gets retired by the NHL.

  • It was retired for the entire league is my understanding. No player could choose 99, even if he wanted to.

BQ: I doubt it. No matter how good Crosby is, he probably won't reach the Gretzky level, and it's not just due to injuries. The Pens may retire it, but I doubt the league will.

nope, only gretzky is allowed to wear that number....

bq: if he didn't have injury problems, and broke all the records by the end of his career, then it would be up for legit consideration, but thats extremely unlikely now...i can see the penguins retiring his jersey number though regardless if he ever plays another game.

Nooo... dats the great onez numbah! It's retired throughout the league.

BQ: Too early to tell, lets see if he can do anything jaw dropping like breaking Gretzky's records or set records.

It's not allowed. Not that anyone would have the balls to do it but it's not allowed.

no,they retired it. i think its dumb, because he didnt do what jackie robinson did to baseball.

BQ: No way. Besides, 87 is a dumb number, except in football (wrs and tes)
