Thoughts on the boy name Sabin?

While tailgating at my college's football game this weekend, I met a woman that was a friend of my friend's, and she brought her eleven-year-old son Sabin (SAY-ben). I had never heard the name and thought it was quite interesting.

I'm imagining it's related to the feminine name Sabine/Sabina. At first glance, it seems like it should work fine in English. It has the familiar two-syllable, ends-in-N pattern of so many popular boys' names. It also has the stylish long A sound of Aidan/Kaden/Mason/Gabriel/Jacob/etc.

Because it's so unfamiliar, though -- it's the even-more-obscure masculine version of an obscure feminine name -- it will read as foreign to many people. I find myself wondering what European country your friend's friend is from. In fact, the only downside I can see to this name is that the boy might frequently be asked, "Where are you from?" when he introduces himself. This isn't necessarily a huge downside.

Overall, I think the name is attractive and would be a viable option in the U.S.

I've only read it online, never met someone with the name. To me, it just sounds like "say ben"... There's something fun about B's placed in the middle of names that just sounds kind of offbeat. But Sabin isn't my favorite. It also makes me feel like someone is trying to say "saving" but pronouncing it incorrectly... haha. It just seems a little bit too much for me to consider, but it's interesting to see it used by others, I guess.

It reminds me of my little sister's name Sabyne (Suh-Bean). I don't like it not on a boy.
