a body with mass = 4kg is moving along straight line on a frictionless surface with speed v = 10 m/s. at a certain point the surface becomes rough with a friction coefficient u = .25 m/s. find the distance from the begining of the rough segment to a point at which the body's speed is 1/2 the initial speed.

The velocity will not reduce on the friction less surface.
In the begining of the rough segment its velocity is 10m/s
deceleration in the rough segment is 0.25 g = 2.45m/s^2 or acceleration = - 2.45 m/s^2
Final velocity is 10/2 = 5 m/s
Using v^2 -u^2 = 2as
5^2-10^2 = 2*(-2.45)*s
s = 15.31 m

The normal force of the mass N = mg
Frictional force F =-μmg
acceleration a =force/mass = -μg
