How do I insert equation symbols in Microsoft Word on a Mac? PLEASE?

I do not have the newest version of Word. I'm pretty sure it's Microsoft Word X for Mac or something. I'm writing a Calculus paper and I can't figure out how to insert exponents and a matrix. Please, please help me!

People have been telling me to go under Insert ---> Object ---> Equation Editor, but my version doesn't have Equation Editor. I've looked everywhere, and tried the "help" thing. Please help! Thanks!

The information in the link below will help you determine if equation editor is installed.

You will find it under Insert>Object>Microsoft Equation if/once it is installed.
