How come every time a state passes tough immigration laws, the federal government pushes back?

Even suing a state in some cases. Does the federal government like to have these undocumented folks flooding into our communities ?

It is a reminder that the federal government is not enforcing federal law. It is also a reminder that the federal government is not protecting our borders (i.e. providing for the common defense.) as they are required to do. It is huge reminder that the federal government is failing us.

It's because sometimes state laws contravene the US federal constitution, which is prohibited. For example, in the case of Plyler v. Doe (1981) the US Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional States’ actions to limit the education of children only to those whose parents could prove that they were legal residents of the United States. The Supreme Court decided in Plyler that this was a violation of their rights as guaranteed under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Tough, legal, and illegal, laws are not the same.
