How are building numbers defined?
It's always intrigued me why 599 Lexington Avenue is 599 Lexington Avenue, rather than 600 Lexington Avenue or 598 Lexington Avenue. What criteria are observed when numbering buildings, creating so-called "street addresses"?
P.S.: Of course I don't actually wonder about 599 Lexington Avenue specifically. It's just an example.
(To Anita Arnold)
That was not my question. What I mean is, what does 599 stand for? Is the building 599 yards from the beginning of the street? Was it built 599 miles off the coast? What do the numbers represent, actually?!

Usually the even numbers are on the same side of the road and that makes the uneven numbers on the other side :)
