depends how long you are stuck in that situation
and how strongly you hold your political opinions
by friend acted liberal in college for 5 years (or at least not blatantly conservative)
if you are trying to meet new people, it is best not to introduce a point of difference
if you don't need to make friends there (can go home, only there for a short time
then it doesn't really matter
if you think the other side of the abortion debate is evil, you probably don't want to be friends though
friends are a major human need (belonging, community, appearance)
[consider the closet homosexual religious and political conservatives]

Only independents switch parties to fit in.
They wait till there is a majority and then follow the crowd.
The overwhelming majority of Democrats and Republicans stick to their party no matter what.
The rule is if you get a governmet check you vote for democrats
