What do the letters mean in Swedish cities (details)?
I have a family tree that is mostly Swedish people and after each place names it says (AB), (Y), or (Z). Maybe others too. For Family Tree Maker you need the part or province of the country also, and sometimes there are a few choices. How do I find out what the letters in parentheses mean?
i know they represent parts of Sweden, just not what part. for example:
Hällesjö (Z). Hallesjo is in Jamtland.
Fanbyn, Stöde (Y).

My guess is that the letters stands for each of the 26 swedish countys, that where used on cars number plates between 1916-1973 and obviously in other cases as well, like in your documentation.
(Z) stands for Jämtland county
(Y) stands for Västernorrland county
(AB) stands for Stockholm county

There are several web sites on the Swedish Alphabet on line. The person who created the tree you are referring to may have used a "code" to represent the area or the connections, if that is the case there should to a key to the code on the chart. It could also mean the county at the time the person lived. I have seen both done on older charts. Unfortunately I have seldom seem an explanation for the annotations and there is nothing I am aware of the is used in Genealogy that you described. I have one chart that is over 150 year old and there are numbers after each name, we have never been able to figure out what they represent.

None of what you mention is part of Swedish cities, or standard genealogy.
"I have a family tree"..who made the "tree"? Any so called family trees online are not facts. They are summaries of someone's research, and that person has inserted notations that are of his/her own making. Since that person decided to insert those letters, you would have to contact that person.
Over here..the regulars will try to tell you that any posted family trees are subject to mistakes. Without background in finding original records, you may be copying info that is in error.
IF the entry gives you a specific town/village..you have to use sources such as maps or gazetteers to learn the province, county, etc.
edit...yes..they probably do represent parts of Sweden. I repeat..it is probably the person who made the tree, who assigned their own choice of what they represent. They are not official.

I am a quarter Swede, so I went on ancestry.com to search on my Swedish surname looking for records in Swedish. I found some with sources going back to the old country, but couldn't find what you are looking at. If you post a link here, maybe someone can figure out what it is. You could also post this in the travel or language sections and find a Swede to help you.
