How would you test brakes and usability on an junkyard axle?

I'm swapping out a bad 10 bolt 2:73 for a corporate 14 bolt full floating. I need to know how to test the brakes and the axle to make sure they work.

    the only way you can test is to fit the new axle and connect the braking system and drive it a distance
