First of all, Let me clear that I really don't have any problem if south indians don't speak Hindi.. I asked this question just coz I was curious to know..
@Anikruti.. I might have asked what you wanted to ask, but whatever you have written wasn't my point for asking this question..
@Rebel.. Sir, everyone loves their mother tongue.. Even I love my mother tongue.. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't know our national language.. I speak my mother tongue.. I speak hindi too..

Well, it is cos South Indians are not much exposed to HIndi. All the north Indian languages have certain relation towards their mother tongue. This is not the case here in South India. India is not a country from the very beginning. Even the race is totally very different. South Indians belong to Dravidian race. We don't speak hindi as hindi is not even the medium of language in our country. It is our National language as many people in our country speak hindi. In southern states, English is the first language in most of the educational institutions and any language could be their second language. So, people here go for their mother tongue as second language and sometimes other language which may be hindi or french or others.
Really i don't want to be so mean. But then, for every one their mother tongue is something special and we don't feel the necessity to learn hindi, despite of the fact that it is our national language. Not that we are racist or something. The true fact is hindi is our national language only cos of certain dominance!

To the first answer
1) Dravidian is NOT a race. Just like Indo-Aryan is not a race. They are language-families. Simply linguistic groups. Even the term Dravidian was recently constructed by anthropologists etc. It is simply a term of language family. There is no difference in race between the gujaratis and the tamils. They all have common ancestors.
2) Many South Indians DO know Hindi, as all schools teach it along with English. So your question is kind of wrong to ask. Most south indians can converse in Hindi.

Not Fair to generalize. Many South-Indians can speak Hindi.
Hindi is not the national language of India.India doesn't have any National Langauge. The constitution of Indian doesn't specify any National language.

its kind of a long story....
you know hindi is derived from sanskrit and sanskrit came to india from the aryans
these aryans migrated to india in BC (not clear from where). before they arrived the dravidians and harappans (ancient native indians) were the only major inhabitants of india. so after the aryans arrived with their superior military they conquered the dravidians and drove them to the south of india and occupied major parts of the north. as the dravidians had dark skin and the aryans had fair skin, the latter considered themselves superior to the former. many of the famous kings of old who conquered whole of india and beyond were of aryan origin. and then this dominion of the aryans continued and in future times many invaders came to india and robbed it of its culture. for example the british
after independence hindi was told to be the national language of india because it was spoken in majority of the country and shared words and phrases of sanskrit with every indian language. it was also easier to learn.
but the south indian languages remained quite distinct due to their originality. they were not aryan languages but were dravidian. its very difficult to forget your own culture and language. and the south indian states stuck to their distinct dialect. if you listen to a south indian language, say, malayalam, you would know how different it is from the north indian languages. so it proved to be difficult for the south indian people to pick up hindi quickly.
although if you go out on the street you would find few hindi speakers in south indian states. but many educated people do know hindi well today in the south indian states :)
